What is Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy?

  • Myo- is Greek for muscle, relating to muscle tissue.
  • Fascia is a matrix of fibrous connective tissue that lies beneath the skin and between muscles and muscle groups.
  • A Trigger point is a hyperirritable spot within the muscle or fascia that is tender and hypersensitive. These points can be found in the skin, fascia, ligaments, and periosteal tissues (bone).
  • Goal: To resolve myofascial and trigger point pain.

The Longer Pain is Present

The longer pain remains unaddressed, the more your body begins to accept it as normal, adapting to the discomfort.
As pain persists, your body recruits other muscles into the pain pattern, leading to further dysfunction.
This ongoing activation impacts your quality of life on all levels and can cause a cycle of pain and muscle compensation.

What Will I Experience?

During treatment, you will be worked on with feedback on a pain scale from 1 to 10—never
exceeding a 5/10.
Applying too much pressure causes your body to resist and protect surrounding tissues. Your feedback is crucial—correct pressure allows trigger points and fascia to relax.
With gentle, controlled pressure, the tissue will gradually invite more release. The session concludes with a heat pack and stretching to support recovery.

Understaning Trigger Points and Referred Pain

A trigger point is an intensely sensitive area that can cause pain elsewhere in the body, a phenomenon known as referred pain.
A trained Trigger Point Therapist specializes in identifying how pain refers from one area to another, using scientific knowledge of referral patterns confirmed through physical examination.

This precise understanding allows us to target the root causes of your pain effectively.

How Does It Work?

Using skilled palpation, I identify specific muscle fibers affected by the trigger point.
Once located, hands-on techniques are used to release the trigger point precisely.
While many experience significant relief after a single session, chronic pain may require
up to five treatments.

Your history—occupation, diet, sleep, activity levels, prior treatments, and personal goals—helps craft a comprehensive plan.
This approach not only aims to eliminate pain but also empowers you to maintain your improved health and prevent future pain activation.

Synergizing ESWT with Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy

While Trigger Point Therapy focuses on deactivating hyperirritable spots within muscles, ESWT enhances tissue healing by reducing stiffness, inflammation, and promoting repair.
Together, these therapies are highly complementary:

  • ESWT improves tissue health, making trigger points easier to deactivate.
  • Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy decreases muscle tension, preparing tissues for more effective Extracorporeal Shockwave sessions.

This combination addresses both structural and neurological contributors to pain, often resulting in faster, more sustained relief and improved tissue health.
